The Society was founded in 1865 and was granted a Royal Charter in 1965. The Society was established for the promotion and extension of mathematical knowledge. Its principal activities are the publication of periodicals and books and the organisation of meetings, conferences and symposia. In spite of its name, the Society is not simply a London society.
